One Way In

urn:js:virtue:aspire:principle:12.1

TL;DR

Data feeds can arrive via any one of the agreed strategic routes.

Rational

Data feeds can arrive via any one of the agreed strategic routes (see ingestion patterns outlined in the ASPIRE Target Architecture [Ref. 1]).

However, there must only be one entry point for ingestion into a strategic data store – i.e. data must not be loaded directly into any of the downstream layers from outside the strategic environment (this also applies to tactical data stores/solutions such as sandboxes).

The key drivers are:

  • Border control – Manage data and metadata quality, consistency, integrity and security at the point of entry.
  • Data inventory – Simplifies the process for maintaining a detailed inventory of inbound data that can be made available to the users.
  • Avoid duplication – Reduces the risk of duplicating feeds.

Implications

The potential implication is:

  • Perceived lack of flexibility – Users will not be able load data directly into any of the downstream layers which may be perceived as slowing them down. However, this can be mitigated with streamlined ingest processes.
